About the Coroner
An introduction to the Coroner's role and responsibilities
In Jersey, the Viscount is the Senior Coroner and is responsible for the Coroner Service. The Deputy Viscount also acts as a Coroner. From time to time, other qualified individuals are also appointed as a Relief Coroner to conduct inquests.
The Coroner investigates deaths that might not be from natural causes, including when the person was in state care or custody.
An inquest is a special court procedure to find out who the deceased was, and how, when, and where they died. The public can usually attend an inquest unless there’s a reason to keep part of it private.
Families and interested persons
If someone close to you has died and their death is being investigated, or if you’re a witness, you might need more information about the role the Coroner performs. Funeral directors and medical professionals
Funeral directors and doctors might need to complete several forms or contact the Coroner for specific purposes. There are sections of this site dedicated to providing essential information for those groups.
