Working with Prisoners

Supporting Prisoners After Release

Jersey Probation & After-Care Service (JPACS) and the Prison work together to help prisoners successfully return to society when they are released, and to ensure public safety.

Probation Service Responsibilities

Every prisoner is assigned a Probation Officer. This officer stays in touch with the prisoner and, if needed, with their family or close contacts.  The support provided to the prisoner is based on their individual needs, as outlined in their Pre-Sentencing Report (PSR) and during their sentence.

There is also a part-time Probation Officer at the Prison.  This officer is in charge of leading meetings to assess the risks for prisoners who apply for early release, and they coordinate with Victim Services when necessary.

Probation Officers will:

  • provide reports for meetings that plan the prisoner's reintegration and early release
  • work with prison staff on managing risks
  • represent the Probation Service on early release panels and attend reintegration planning meetings

Responsibilities After Release

The Probation Officer encourages released prisoners to stay in contact (if appropriate) to help them successfully settle back into the community.

Prison Responsibilities

Besides ensuring the safety of prisoners and managing their sentences, the Prison will:

  • share important information about the prisoners behaviour or circumstances with JPACS
  • consider granting conditional early release to prisoners, depending on their risk assessments
