Housing for People on Probation

States Housing: If you qualify for local housing, you can apply if you meet their eligibility criteria They give priority to those in greatest need.

The Shelter Trust : Provides emergency housing and long-term support for homeless people at four locations

Salvation Army: May help with basic home essentials like cleaning supplies or food.  Speak to your Probation Officer for a referral.

Alcohol and Drug Support 

Alcohol and Drugs: Helps people with drug or alcohol problems.  If you are required to see them as part of your sentence, you must comply or you face being returned to Court.  The service also offers a Needle Exchange Scheme.

Alcoholics Anonymous : Offers free confidential group and one-on-one support for alcohol addiction. 

Narcotics Anonymous : Supports anyone wanting to stop using drugs, regardless of the type of drug.

Silkworth Lodge : Provides residential treatment for drug and alcohol addiction, with free consultations available. 

Al-Anon : Supports families and friends of people with alcohol addiction.

Young People's Drug Use - Advice for Parents

This guide will help you understand the effects of drugs and their use. It is based on the latest best practice and contains practical advice about what you can actually do as a parent, whether your children are using drugs or not.  Young people's drug use, advice for parents

Legal and Court Support

Youth Court: Handles cases for those 17 and under.  It is private, and less formal than other Courts.

Magistrate's Court: Deals with most offenders and can issue sentences up to 12 months.  More serious cases are sent to Royal Court.

Royal Court : Handles serious cases and can issue sentences of over 4 years.

Legal Aid If you cant afford a Lawyer, you can apply for Legal Aid.  The application is lengthy and asks for financial details. Otherwise, you can view law firms in Jersey on the Jersey Law website.

Renewal of your driving licences If you were disqualified from driving, you can reapply for your licence once the ban ends.

Employment Support 

Finding a job: Back to Work

Jersey Employment Trust : JET helps people, including those with disabilities, find jobs and offers training.

Disclosing Convictions: You need to disclose previous convictions when applying for jobs, unless they are considered "spent".  If you are unsure, ask your Probation Officer or have a look at the Jersey Legal Information Board 

Talking to Employers: Be honest about your past but focus on why you would be good for the job.  Volunteering or training can help build confidence and experience. 

Talk to your Probation Officer if you would like assistance with bringing up convictions with a potential employer.

Health & Medical Services

Your GP : Is your main contact for physical and mental health issues.  After 6 months in Jersey you can get a health card for reduced doctor's fees and free prescriptions.  Here is a List of surgeries and GPs in Jersey (gov.je)

Help 2 Quit Smoking : This is a free and confidential service offering help to stop smoking. 

Brook : Offers free and confidential information and support on relationships, sex, contraception, pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. They offer this service to young people up to the age of 21.

GUM Clinic : This is a walk-in service, based in the General Hospital. You can be tested and treated for sexually transmitted infections, HIV and hepatitis.

Mental Health Support: Mental health services are available through your GP.  Other services include Mind Jersey and the Samaritans  who offer support for people in emotional distress. TOP Jersey offers help to anyone who has a severe phobia, or who suffer with OCD. 

Financial Help

Income Support : A benefit for those who meet specific criteria.  If you are job-seeking, you will need to meet with Work Zone.

Special Payments : One-off financial help for things like medical bills or essential household items. 

Incapacity Benefit : For people who cannot work due to illness or disability.  It is split into short term, (up to 1 year) and longer term

Financial Advice: The Probation Service has access to a financial advisor.   You can get help from the Community Savings team have created a Budget Planner. or Citizens Advice Jersey.
