Getting a copy of a Jersey grant of probate and will

You can get a copy of a will by contacting the Probate Registry.

We aim to give you a copy of the will within three weeks after your request, although this can't be guaranteed.

We hold wills from 2000 to date. Any wills prior to that date are held by Jersey Archive. You'll need to contact Jersey Archive directly.

In most cases the will refers to movable (personal) estate and not immovable (real) estate.

Wills of immovable (real) estate are lodged with the Public Registry, so you'll need to contact them for this information.

What you need to tell us

To get a copy of a grant of probate and will, you'll need to tell us the following:

  • the full name of the deceased person
  • the maiden name of the deceased person (if applicable)
  • any other names the deceased person may have been known under
  • the full date of death or at least the year of death

Cost of a Jersey grant and will copy

We charge £1 per page.

The average will and grant is four pages long, so the average cost will be £4 (plus postage).

We can charge an additional fee to conduct a search depending on the number of documents you need and the length of the search.

Paying for your copy

Once the probate registry has advised you how much the copy will cost, you will need to contact the treasury cashiers at customer and local services.

Types of copy available

The type of copy we can provide depends on the nature of the application. We will usually give you a plain photocopy to be used for information purposes only.

An administrator or executor can request a local or sealed and certified copy in addition to the original document. The costs are:

  • local copies are £1 per page
  • sealed and certified copies are £1 per page plus £30 for the certification

Local copies are for official use within the Island. This includes producing a copy of a mixed will (which includes disposal of immovable estate) for use within the Public Registry.

Sealed and certified copies are for official use off-Island and can only be provided if we hold original documents.

Other documents relating to an estate

Other documents, for example, oaths and powers of attorney, are not public documents, so we do not usually have copies available.

To get a copy the Registrar of Probate must either:

  • be authorised in writing by the administrator, executor or his / her attorney to provide a copy to a third party or
  • be ordered by the Royal Court of Jersey to provide a copy

Unlike a UK grant, a Jersey Grant doesn't give the net and gross values of an estate.
